Article Update: For a simpler, but more informative description of what Brainwave Entrainment is, read “What is Brainwave Entrainment?” from my EntrainFAST website (both links open in a new window).
I speak an awful lot about brain entrainment throughout this website, and for those who have never heard of it, I understand that the term may be kind of confusing. When I speak of brain entrainment here, I am referring to brain en-train-ment (not entertainment as some may refer to it as) through sound therapy. In short, it is an effective method of controlling your current brain state to better achieve what you want in life–because our biggest inhibitor is, well, ourselves.
What are the different brain states?
Our brainwave frequencies vary according to what mental state we are in. For example, if you are daydreaming, or meditating very lightly, your brain is in the Alpha range of frequencies (8-14 hertz). So when you listen to audio (normally for more than six minutes) that’s consistently in between 8-14 Hz (10 Hz for example), your brain will begin to follow that frequency and reproduce the rhythm of the sound. Your brain will then automatically begin to generate more brainwaves at 10 Hz and then enter into the Alpha brain wave state, which is a mental state that promotes relaxation.
Listed below are the different brainwave states of consciousness:
- Gamma (30-60 Hz) – Associated with consciousness, disappears when put under anesthesia; there is debate on where Beta ends and Gamma begins.
- Beta (14-30 Hz) – Wide awake, anxious, alert, eyes open and fully conscious.
- Alpha (8-14 Hz) – Relaxed but still conscious, daydreaming, or relaxed with eyes closed.
- Theta (4-8 Hz) – Drowsiness, drifting off to sleep but not unconscious yet, deeper meditation is usually held here.
- Delta (< 5 Hz) – Deep sleep, unconscious (dreaming for example).
All of the above brain wave states are useful for getting in the “mindset” of accomplishing certain tasks. For example, if your brain is currently in the Alpha or Theta frequency range, it would be hard to study material, because your focus would be lacking and your body would be wanting to slowly drift off to sleep (Ever get sleepy while reading a book? You don’t remember much of what you read right?).
However, if you had something that could bring your brain into the correct mental state while performing certain activities, you could better accomplish tasks, stay motivated, retain information, etc. Brainwave states can be controlled by either meditating (very slow, and takes years of practice to perfect), or by listening to specially designed audio tracks that bring your brain into these mental states within just a few minutes.
This is where brain wave entrainment audios come in
Personally, I’m a very big advocate of brain wave entrainment audios because of how effective they are in bringing your brain into the desired frequency range quickly and easily. They are in my opinion one of the greatest personal development tools available.
All you do is hit play on your audio player (computer, mp3 player, cd player, etc.), you hear relaxing sounds (sometimes if no music or nature sounds are added, all you hear is a thick “helicopter” or “electric fan”-type sound) and within minutes you feel your mental state changing to where you wanted it to be. For example, when I am studying, writing, or trying to concentrate, I listen to an audio called “Laser-Focused Concentration” (created by Entrainment Lab)which puts my brain into the Beta frequency range, where I can better focus on my material, stay motivated/alert, and get more accomplished.
When I am focusing on my goals, visualizing what I want, giving myself positive affirmations to “program” my thinking, I’ll listen to an audio that will put me into the Alpha range, where I can relax and focus on self-reflection and improvement.
While all of those things can be done without brain entrainment audios (reading, focusing, visualizing, studying, etc.), it would be much more difficult to try to do those tasks effectively if my brain was in the wrong mental state.
